Lighthouse Names Participatory Design Specialist Fernando Delgado as Senior Director of AI & Analytics

August 1, 2024

Lighthouse, a leader in technology-enabled eDiscovery, compliance, and information governance services, announced today that Fernando Delgado, Ph.D., has been promoted to Senior Director of AI & Analytics. As the company’s AI product portfolio grows, Delgado, who has 19 years of experience developing analytics- & AI-based alternatives and accelerators for document review, takes a leadership role in developing products that leverage predictive and generative AI. Delgado champions a Participatory AI method that has not only generated new innovations like the Lighthouse Gen AI Privilege Log capability, but also evolves the Large Language Models (LLMs)-based predictive AI solutions that have been at the core of Lighthouse technology for several years.

“As the legal industry navigates the ethical and practical considerations around AI, a critical aspect of design must be human alignment,” said Delgado. “That alignment isn't some abstract computational process but a social design-focused process – you achieve AI system alignment with human values by including the relevant humans in key moments of the design process from inception.”

This participatory methodology and cooperative design process is central to Delgado’s team’s approach to designing, developing, and enhancing Lighthouse’s current and future products, as demonstrated by the launch of Lighthouse AI Privilege Review, which was developed in conjunction with client Cleary Gottlieb. “The way our team engages in the design process often involves a ‘co-design’ process with law firm innovation partners,” said Lon Troyer, Ph.D., Vice President of Review and Advanced Analytics at Lighthouse. “Having someone like Fernando, who is an expert in the participatory design theory, as a leading voice in our process will help solidify Lighthouse’s leadership as legal technology innovators.”

Delgado has nearly 20 years of experience in the legal tech field and recently earned a Ph.D.  in Information Science from Cornell University, where his dissertation studied what participatory design processes look like and how they can be structured for meaningful engagement with domain experts. He also holds a Master of Science in Organization Management from the New School and a Bachelor and Master of Arts in Linguistics from the University of Illinois.
